Five things

What a tobacco really needs.

There are marketing promises. And then there is what really counts. Five things we cannot replace – and do not want to.

I

Soil

A leaf always carries within it the story of the soil it grew in.

II

Climate

Swiss summers, foehn valleys, morning mist. The climate redraws the picture every year.

III

Time

Some things can be sped up. Character is not one of them.

IV

Craft

Machines can deliver precision. Experience and a feel for the work, they cannot.

V

Attitude

Machines create uniformity. People create quality.

Swiss field tobacco

Heimat Tabak is made from 100% natural Swiss tobacco, without additives or flavorings. Unlike many conventional cigarettes, it contains no artificial additives, making it a purely natural product. This ensures an authentic, unadulterated smoking experience.

The tobacco comes from Swiss cultivation areas, where it grows under natural conditions in Swiss fields. This careful sourcing ensures high quality and purity, unlike imported tobacco, which is often subject to industrial processes and additives.

Heimat Tabak is processed in a small, specialized factory in Steinach on Lake Constance. Passion and patience are at the heart of the manufacturing process. This allows for individual, precise processing of the tobacco, something that cannot be guaranteed to the same extent in large factories.

— Swiss Tabacco, Verband Schweizer Tabakpflanzer

— Dr. Heinrich Nösberger, Tabakforschung Schweiz (historische Publikation)

Virginia vs. Burley: Wissenschaftliche Unterschiede

Eigenschaft Virginia Burley
Natürlicher Zuckergehalt 15–22% 0.5–5%
Trocknungsmethode Heisslufttrocknung (Flue-cured) Lufttrocknung (Air-cured)
Trocknungsdauer 5–7 Tage 4–8 Wochen

step by step

10 steps to tobacco production

This is how your local tobacco is created, which you can buy directly from us. We're a family business, and everything from the field to the factory is 100% Swiss. Clearly documented and traceable.

  1. Cultivation & Care (Swiss Fields)
Selected plots, regional farmers, short distances. Our tobacco is grown in Switzerland. This is the basis for our consistent quality.
  2. Harvesting by hand
Ripe leaves are picked gradually, ensuring the natural ripeness of each picking is consistent and the batches are cleanly separated.
  3. Transport to Payerne (VD)
Immediately after harvest, the wine is sent to the fermentation center. Logistics remain regional to ensure the route from field to processing remains short.
  4. Fermentation in Payerne
The leaves ripen under controlled conditions. Temperature, humidity, and time are recorded. Each batch receives its own fermentation profile.
  5. Remove the stems – leaf by leaf
After ripening, the midribs are removed. This step ensures a uniform leaf structure for the subsequent blend.
  6. Continue to Steinach (SG) – Manufactory on Lake Constance
In Steinach, only Swiss tobacco is processed. Blends are created here, and the tobacco is calibrated, cut, and finished here.
  7. Refining with Swiss mountain spring water
The leaves are gently moistened and prepared. The goal is to ensure even processing and a harmonious cut.
  8. Cutting & Calibration
Depending on the format (e.g., RYO/MYO), the tobacco is adjusted to the cut length and moisture content. Regular sample checks ensure consistency.
  9. Traceability & Documentation
From the fields to Payerne and Steinach: Every batch is fully documented. So you know where Heimat Tabak comes from and how it was processed.
  10. Final blend & Swiss Made finish
The “Light” and “Dark” blends are finalized, packaged, and made available for retail – without long transport routes.
