The tobacco-free herbal cigarette is not a modern invention. Its trail runs back more than two thousand years – from the Ayurvedic smoke ritual, through the asthma cigarette of European pharmacies, to the Schwiizer Chrüterzigi. This compendium tells the story of a category that was once medicine, then vanished – and returns today as a product of pleasure.
Two traditions. One idea.
Inhaling the smoke of burning medicinal plants to ease breathing is a very old idea. The Egyptian Ebers Papyrus describes heated stones covered with herbs, their smoke drawn in through a reed. In India and in Europe, the practice arose independently – and endured for centuries.
The decisive transfer came by way of colonial India. British observers saw datura smoked against asthma there – and brought the practice home. It fell on fertile ground.
General Gent brings back from southern India a remedy for asthma attacks, prepared from the roots of the wild thorn apple. Through Dr Sims, the practice enters the Western pharmacopoeia.
Five years earlier, the physician Samuel Cooper had already introduced smoked stramonium in the United States. Both dates are documented – they do not exclude each other.
When supplies of Indian datura ran out, an asthmatic surgeon turned to the native common thorn apple instead. With that, the plant’s European career began.
The practice met a society in which some 80 % of men and 40 % of women already smoked. The medium was familiar – only the content was new.
At first, stramonium was smoked in ordinary pipes. By way of the cigar – in 1846 Mr Butler introduced stramonium cigars in Covent Garden – the ready-made asthma cigarette emerged in the 1850s and 1860s. A dense product landscape followed: advertised in daily papers, sold in pharmacies from Paris to Chicago.
Paris, from 1862 at the latest. The international market leader, distributed in more than two dozen countries. Main active ingredient, by contemporary analysis: belladonna.
France, from 1858. The main competitor – belladonna, thorn apple and henbane leaves, plus a small pinch of opium.
Great Britain. One of the most popular brands: stramonium, belladonna, atropine. Manufactured until 1988 – longer than any other.
USA. Sold as a powder, as cigarettes and as an incense, in packs of 24 – expressly labelled «contains no tobacco».
Asthma cigarettes were available in Swiss pharmacies. From 1901 they were covered by the «Concordat against secret remedies»: the first list, dated 15 April 1901, held 611 preparations, among them the Berlin bronchial cigarettes. The Pharmacopoea Helvetica listed a «Pulvis Stramonii compositus», expressly as an asthma powder. According to the Pharmazeutische Zeitung, such cigarettes remained available through pharmacies into the 1970s.
The decline was not an event but a slow fading. Several forces worked together – and reinforced one another.
In over 300 years of Swiss tobacco tradition much has been refined, but one thing had never existed: a herbal cigarette developed and made in a Swiss manufactory. It is built from carefully selected Swiss organic herbs – without a single tobacco leaf, without nicotine, without artificial additives, made as pre-rolls in packs of 20.

Where the asthma cigarette wanted to be medicine, the Chrüterzigi is pleasure – regulated under Swiss tobacco products law as a plant-based smoking product, not as a medicine.

The Wildling recipe is created at our HEIMAT manufactory on Lake Constance. Here, the blend is balanced, mixed and crafted into the finished Swiss Herbal Cigarette Wildling.

That’s exactly where the idea for our Wildling came from.
It’s the boldest blend in our herbal cigarette family. Spicier than Original and Älpler, more distinctive in character and with a freshness that doesn’t hide.
Mullein and hazelnut leaf give it its botanical base. Sage and yarrow bring spice and depth. Peppermint adds a clear, fresh accent. Lady’s mantle brings the blend together and rounds it off.
The Wildling isn’t trying to please everyone.
It can be bolder.
It can be more herbaceous.

We wanted to create a genuine alternative for everyone who enjoys the ritual of a cigarette – but doesn’t always want tobacco and nicotine.
For some, the herbal cigarette is simply a conscious change. For others, it can be a companion when reducing tobacco consumption or leaving it behind altogether.
For us, there’s no contradiction in that. Quite the opposite: HEIMAT stands for enjoyment and self-determination. And sometimes, Heimat also means rethinking what we’re used to.
That’s why we took the cigarette back to its roots: plants, leaves and flowers. No tobacco. No nicotine. With a ritual that remains familiar.
Because for many people, a cigarette isn’t just nicotine.
It’s also a shared moment.
Stepping outside after a meal. Sitting together at a festival. Having a conversation outside a bar. Going outside together during a break.
Choosing to go without tobacco or nicotine doesn’t automatically mean wanting to give up those moments.
