This is how Heimat grows hemp

Know-how, experience, and passion: These are the ingredients our team uses to cultivate first-class hemp flowers in western Switzerland. This is the only way to create natural products that impress both visually and tastefully, as well as with a high CBD content. This is the basis for the consistently high quality of Heimat products – from pre-rolls to hemp tea.

How is CBD hemp grown?

As in so many areas, hemp cultivation requires knowledge, experience, time, and commitment. And it requires ideal conditions.

Hemp grows best in loose, well-drained soils rich in organic nutrients. Seedlings and cuttings can be planted out in the field when soil temperatures in spring are well above freezing, even at night. Hemp plants require sufficient moisture and nutrients throughout their growth cycle. Our experts must therefore be constantly vigilant and constantly monitor the plants and their needs to ensure the most abundant flowering.

It's also important to protect the hemp plants from natural pests and diseases. We attach great importance to protecting our plants in a natural way. One way to combat pests naturally without the use of pesticides is to grow companion plants alongside hemp that naturally repel pests.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor?

For generations, hemp, like any other cultivated plant, was cultivated outdoors in nature until legal restrictions, among other things, forced it into the illegal and thus indoors. But even though CBD hemp is now publicly permitted to be cultivated again in Switzerland, there are still good reasons for indoor cultivation. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages:

Indoor

Indoor hemp benefits from a protected environment and thus from constant, controlled conditions. Lights and irrigation systems take over the role of sun and rain. This type of cultivation is therefore more labor- and energy-intensive. The major advantage: long periods of drought or rain, temperature fluctuations, or gusty winds do not harm indoor hemp. These optimal conditions generally result in more productive harvests from indoor cultivation.

Outdoor

Much of what is done by humans or machines in indoor cultivation is done by nature in the open field. In return, hemp is exposed to the whims of nature. But it also grows as it has for centuries. Similar to wine, the "terroir" of hemp is another interesting factor in outdoor cultivation. This means that the characteristic conditions of the local soil and regional climate give the hemp an additional, individual flavor. The same hemp variety can exhibit diverse aroma and flavor nuances when grown in different regions. Outdoor cultivation requires a great deal of sensitivity and know-how from our hemp experts to ensure the plants thrive.

The Harvest: Reward for Hard Work

While indoor cultivation allows for multiple harvests per year, in the wild, the plant follows the cycle of the seasons. At the end of a long growing season, hemp plants are harvested in the fall, when the cannabinoid content of the flowers is at its peak. The hemp flowers are carefully harvested by hand and then air-dried. The drying process typically takes at least 16 weeks. By then, the sticky resin, which contains the goodness of the hemp plant (such as terpenes and cannabinoids), has hardened.

And then the time has finally come: the hemp flowers are used to create a wide range of high-quality CBD products in the home factory in Eastern Switzerland.
